MPL
Since 2002, Minnesota Prairie Line (MPL) has been the operator of the 94 mile line. MPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Twin Cities & Western railroad locally based in Glencoe, Minnesota. MPL serves some of the most productive agricultural counties of Minnesota.
Restoration started in April 2002 and MPL began operations in October 2002. Rail traffic has been increasing now that dependable rail service has been restored. Future plans involve further upgrading with a goal of achieving 25 mph operation. MPL is the first railroad in Minnesota to operate locomotives using 5% biodiesel fuel, which is supplied by FUMPA Biofuels in Redwood Falls.
Commodities handled include: corn, soybeans, distillers dry grain (DDG’s), fertilizer, ethanol, butter, lumber, canned vegetables, biodiesel, tallow, salt (commercial & industrial), aggregates, and rail car storage.
Over the past years, MPL has assisted with reducing congestion on the highways.
MPL works in partnership with the MVRRA and the communities it serves to enhance rural economic development.
